Fairey Ultralight restoration - update

We are delighted to have received a kind donation from J&L Industrial Paint Services Limited to help us with restoration of the Fairey Ultralight.

John, who has been supplying paint and associated products to the aviation industry for more years than he cares to remember, is managing director of the company and personally visited the museum to take samples of the original paintwork from the Ultralight. John is now working to create a colour match so we can restore parts of the aircraft to match existing, undamaged areas.

A huge 'thank you' is due to John and his company for supporting this unique project.

I will post some photo's as the project progresses.

Lynx restoration - update

I've been in touch with Dave Lloyd at RNAS Yeovilton who has sent the following photos of XX910 - quite a difference!

The engine bays remain empty at present although it seems that 2 engines have been agreed for use subject to addressing some formalities. Other items are shelved awaiting fitting, including a set of survival packs.

In the cockpit, flying controls have been put together and a set of dual controls await fitment. The main original airframe paint has been much improved by a day's t-cutting and waxing too.

New acquisition - Eric Myall collection

Today we have taken delivery of a large collection of paperwork from the late Eric Myall, an aviation enthusiast and researcher.

Now begins the huge task of cataloguing it all! By our reckoning, the 16 items we have catalogued represents just 1-2% of the whole collection, which includes books, magazines, journals, loose papers and apparently a manuscript for an unpublished book written by Myall himself. No doubt more will be revealed as we make our way through the collection.

Museums At Night

The Helicopter Museum has announced the theme for this year's Museum At Night event; the Vietnam conflict.

The event will be held over the weekend of 14th/15th May when visitors to the museum will be able to meet G. I’s in authentic period uniform care of several local re-enactment societies who will be supporting the event. The museums very own UH-1H “Huey” helicopter will also be opened up to the public for two days only for visitors to climb inside the cockpit of a military aircraft that actually experienced combat in the Vietnam War, and if that was not enough there will be over 40 flight simulators of various shapes and sizes in the hangars for visitors to 'fly'.

For more information about the event visit the following websites:

Museums in Somerset

On Monday I attended a meeting with the Museums in Somerset group and I was delighted to hear that Somerset will keep our Museum Development Officer, Natalie Watson, for the coming year.

Delegates were also lucky enough to have a guided tour around our host venue; the new Somerset Heritage Centre in Taunton. The facilities are wonderful! We heard that the Museums in Somerset group will be accomodated in their future website development, which is currently in the planning stages, a presence which will unite museums across the County allowing us to really shout about what we have to offer.
